Thank you! As a client of Books By Chance, you are supporting John & Stephanie’s desire to enrich their community through contributions to local education and environmental efforts. A portion of all sales supports 826michigan’s free literary arts programs for kids in Southeast Michigan. A designated contribution to support education and environment through Books by Chance makes even more of an impact for local young people. Last year, 826michigan volunteers worked with 1579 kids, ages 6-18, to teach writing, inspire creativity and promote self expression for these students, each in their own individual voice.

Here are a few of the amazing things you’ve made possible with funds donated via Books By Chance:

  • Tutoring happens four afternoons every week. Volunteer tutors are paired with students to work on everything from writing book reports to tackling geometry to researching American history. Parents tell us this gives kids a great place to focus on homework and allows more family and free time. Tutors tell us their volunteer work is fulfilling and fascinating. Students tell us they love it here!
  • Throughout this academic year, students at Ypsilanti’s Childs Elementary School are learning the fine art of hyperbole in workshops themed on Tall Tales. Our smart, funny and dedicated volunteers take this concept way beyond Paul Bunyon to include students’ own interpretations of wildly exaggerated stories and add the element of personal narrative writing. Efforts result is a spring publication of their work, Tall Tales & True Stories.
  • Rosie and Colby make weekly visits to Ann Arbor’s Hikone Community Center. Rosie, 826michigan’s April 2007 Volunteer of the Month, teaches basic writing skills to students who live in the public housing center there. A journalist and a scientist, she is one of our most valued tutors. Colby is a trained service dog, and 826michigan’s unofficial mascot. Colby very patiently listens while reluctant readers, ages 6-8, practice their skills for her eager ears.

Thank you again for making all of the above, and much more possible at 826michigan.

With gratitude,

Amanda
