How to Choose a Book Seller

When choosing a used book or other media to buy online, you probably scrutinize the condition and price of the various offerings. The reputation of the seller is important too. With so many options, how do you choose?

Amazon makes it easy for anyone with an account to offer a book for sale. Many sellers are just your average person with a book to sell. Most are pros, such as book shop owners. Book businesses that deal exclusively online exist as well.

So, you have the full gamut of sellers on a site like Amazon.

Does the seller have a proven record of delivering quality items in a timely manner? Are they responsive to customers when a problem occurs?

Amazon has a good seller rating system. The buyer rates the seller with 1 to 5 stars, and can also leave a written comment on whether the seller’s description of the book was accurate, delivery was on time, and anything else that might be appropriate for the situation, like how well the seller responded if there was a problem.

Amazon collects and summarizes all feedback so that future buyers can make an informed choice. Ratings are categorized as positive (4-5 stars), neutral (3 stars), or negative (1-2 stars). Shoppers can then see the seller’s percentage of positive feedback. This is more useful to the buyer than the star rating alone.

It is possible for a seller with no negative feedback to have the same star rating as a seller that does have negative feedback. Keep an eye out for negative feedback.

Here are some tips for choosing a seller that is up to snuff. These suggestions are based on the way Amazon’s ratings system works.

  1. Pick a seller with a very high percentage of positive feedback. Most sellers have over 90% positive feedback. 90% is pretty good, but but plenty of sellers maintain higher ratings, so you can probably afford to be picky.
  2. Always read the written comments left by other buyers. Read the negatives, but also look for signs that the seller responds well to problems.
  3. Pick a seller with a star rating 4.5 or higher if possible. A 5-star rating is as good as it gets. Most sellers have earned at least 4.5 stars on average. The star rating is far less meaningful than the percentage of positive feedback, but still useful.
  4. Choose a seller that has at least 100 ratings, and several occurring in the last 30 days. A seller gets about 1 feedback for every 6 books sold. The number of ratings therefore gives you an idea of how active the seller is. More does not mean better, but it gives you an idea of how committed the seller is. If you want to buy from a less experienced seller, send an email first to make sure the book is available and they are prepared to ship it promptly.
  5. Pick a seller that offers expedited shipping, if you need it. Not every seller offers expedited shipping. Some offer it for certain books, but not others. If you are in a little bit of a hurry, you will probably want expedited shipping. Amazon displays the shipping options offered by the seller next to each and every offering.
  6. Pick a seller close to you if possible. It can easily take a couple of weeks for a shipment to go across the United States, so look for a seller no more than a few states away. If you are in the continental United States and you order from a seller in Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico, be prepared to wait several weeks to get your book, unless you pay for expedited shipping. If you are shipping outside of the Unites States, location is not important. (Apologies to the rest of the world that this tip is so U.S. centric.)

Books by Chance Stance

My online book business, Books by Chance LLC, strives to provide the best possible service. Our goal is 100% positive feedback at Amazon. We have dipped to 99% at times, but it is not usually long before we bounce back. Ideally we get an order right on the first try and the customer is satisfied. When problems occur, we do everything within reason to remedy the situation. We always appreciate the opportunity to respond to a problem first before negative feedback submitted.
