Product DescriptionCompanion to the public television series, this practical guide helps the millions of owners of older homes maintain, renovate, and improve their homes. Recognizing that a home is most people's biggest investment, emotionally as well as financially, Bob Yapp helps you bring out the best in your home.

Unlike most home improvement books that offer detailed advice on major projects that the average homeowner would never attempt, readers will find About Your House a refreshing new approach to everyday decisions that face those looking to keep their home beautiful, in excellent condition and within their budget. Each section of the book focuses on common repair and maintenance issues that confront the homeowner, with an emphasis on older houses. Yapp guides you on those projects you'll want to do yourself, when and how to hire a contractor, and performance standards for contractors.

Bob Yapp's approach is practical and knowledgeable. He manages to be respectful of historic houses and materials without assuming a lecturer's air, and his easy manner demystifies the details of home repair. In this way, readers can both become savvy in their own do-it-yourself projects, and feel confident in their decisions to employ professional help. Seasonal tips on spring and fall work around the house relate your project to your particular environment.

Checklists, sketches and sample contracts as appendices provide further assistance in the practical applications of Bob's expertise. From plumbing and electricity to building outside structures and "keeping cool," this foremost expert in home repair combines humor, experience and approachability to create a useful book for almost any homeowner.

About Your House

I found the book excellent for the average home owner. I recently attended his talk in the Pullman Historic District and I found it very informative and got many of my questions answered. Being an owner of a historic Pullman rowhouse built in 1881, I knew it needed special attention then what was being advertised by just regular contractors. Once a resident of Palos, I love old homes and I'm glad I have moved to Pullman and can be a part of the restoration. Thank you for coming to Chicago!

About Your House

This book is wonderful and especially if you have a house which is not so old but needs little work here and there. I got a copy from my friend and use it all the time. But sometimes it needs little courage to use this book and expertise in tool handling. I will rate this book better than the Time Life books specially for the brave ones.
